creamy caramel goodness

another completely random item i wanted to share these days is a yummy rediscovery i made last week. i hope i’m not boring you with this, but i’m starting to enjoy posting everything new i discover.

one of the things that have done me very good in the last couple of months was adding lots of sugar-free, non-caffeinated liquids to my diet. in the summer that meant mostly water, the proverbial eight glasses a day. now in the cold season i find it increasingly hard to drink large amounts of cold water throughout the day. i feel it cools me down too much.
on my search for something that is not caffeinated, like coffee, black or green tea, i have rediscovered an old addiction from my university years: rooibos tea. and my favourite flavor for the wintertime is caramel cream.

rooisbos, meaning “red bush”, is a south african shrub that produces a non-stimulating, slightly sweetish tea with a distinctly earthy flavor. the caramel flavor i prefer adds a little hint of sweetness, and i like to drink this tisane with a little swig of soy milk, which adds another tiny bit of sweetness. so i end up with something that does in a way satisfy my sweet tooth (i’m getting used to less and less sugar and already start feeling that some of the stuff i used to like to eat now feels much too sugary for me, so the sweetness of this drink is already very satisfying), helps me get my 8 glasses of water a day and warms me considerably during these chilly days. the milk makes the taste softer, creamier, and it’s a little like drinking dissolved caramel candies, crème caramel or crème brulee.
okay, now i’m off for another cup. i’m hooked.

  1. Yay! Another Rooibos fan! For a special treat, try a Rooibos latte – delicious.

  2. II second the latte! Freaking Starbucks doesn’t make it anymore. :(

I really like vanilla rooibos. mmmmmmmm.
