chocolate madness
i’ve done two posts in the past concerning weird things people did with chocolate, one about a chocolate jesus done by artist cosimo cavallero and one about chocolate truffles in the shape of a hepatitis c virus.
in the meantime i have stumbled upon a few other mentions of things shaped in chocolate that you usually wouldn’t expect chocolates to look like. and because almost everyone loves a nice piece of chocolate i wanted to share them with you.
here are my top choices:
say cheese!
i’d be almost tempted to try them, can’t decide if i’m repelled or attracted by the idea of combining cheese and chocolate flavors.
the italian company fiordizucca offers chocolate covered parmigiano bits. since good parmigiano reggiano has a distinctive nutty flavor the longer i think about this combination the more reasonable it sounds to me.
and an american-based company called lilliebelle farms sells blue cheese truffles. i guess i have to think about this a little longer. knowing myself, i think i might like them. it just sounds a little too weird.
last chance to see …
obviously there’s a growing market of animal shaped chocolates sold to save the species they resemble, like the chocolate easter bilby, made by australian chocolate manufacturer and retailer darrell lea. i’m sure i wouldn’t want to take a bite of those cute ears, i even have problems biting into a chocolate easter bunny.
and walteria living’s “endangered species chocolates” are clearly made to hang on a wall, not to eat. they are modelled with amazing precision, you can almost count the hairs on that koala’s face.
the beauties
just to show you what beautiful things can be done with – and on – chocolate, here is amercican chocolatier richart’s “children’s ballotin”.
and new york’s mariebelle does whole paintings on chocolate. i think they are breathtaking.
death by chocolate
d.l. & co offers these beautifully packaged “mori ex cacao” chocolate skulls in three flavors, bitter white brandied cherry, scorched caramel and curious chili, as well as a boxed gift set of all three, available from unica home.
the d.l. & co site is worth a visit, too, all kinds of gothy luxury stuff.
it’s art
my favorites out of a chocolate exhibition in tokyo: a miniature city made of chocolate
and the perfect valentine’s day present:
the crafty
a whole set of tools made from chocolate as well as some nuts and bolts, a lightbulb and socket to go. the japanese company based in kobe is called frantz, couldn’t find out much more about them because i can’t read japanese.
and this chocolate nail gives the word “coffin nail” new meaning. it seems to have been created during a design workshop, click the images to go their page if you’re interested, sice i was a little confused by all the information there.
and last but not least …
… my favorite, because it combines two things i just can’t stop with once i’ve started:
chocolate bubble wrap! i guess it’s just a little sad that the bubbles won’t pop when you squeeze them. i love popping bubble wrap.
okay, so now i hope you haven’t all wandered off by now in search of something sweet. me, i think i’ll have a cup of hot chocolate.
