is there any offense in that?

christ sculpted in melk chocolate

i’m genuinely puzzled by the storm of anger this exhibition seems to have raised.

have we gotten that far that it’s not possible to view christian symbols from a slightly different angle? it’s not as if this work is in any way ridiculing or offending the image of christ. does anyone ever question those images? why are good christians forever eating the body of christ in form of a wafer during holy communion? yes, yes, i know the difference, but still …

makes me feel like we’re going back to the middle ages.

  1. I think you have hit the nail on the head with the *middle ages* – I think religions all around the world seem to have stepped back to their earlier roots. Christianity seems to have become more *old testament* in its outlook and values – much more *eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth* as opposed to love they neighbour and turn the other cheek.

Thank you for the link back.

  2. christianity in amerika seems to think it’s under attack by what it sees as an out-of-control secular society. this persecution complex has been leading them for a number of decades to mobilize their flocks and “take back” amerika, little caring that by doing so they will disenfranchise any minority – sexual, moral, religious – that doesn’t share their views, and negate the very history this country was founded on. in fact, they are happy to “retake” history too and make any corrections that serve their cause.

the scary thing about this is, i remember that long semester in high school where all our classes, german, paedogogics, sociology, all teamed up to teach us how hitler came to power and the machinations his party used to take and hold control of the population… and damned if i didn’t feel like i’d just seen a mirror held up to my own home.

nobody likes to be called a facist, and of course everything that the noisiest of christians do is based on the belief that they labor for god and justice. but hey, just look at the damn mess for a while, compare some
    history
, and draw your own conclusions.

*sorry for the rant, this is something that really stings me…

  3. yes, i know what you’re getting at. in germany we’re taught to be very, very careful not to call anyone a fascist (as you know from that high school semester), but yes, there is a similarity.
it’s kind of scary, that creationist thing we talked about last week, too.
i guess people like us would burn at the stake first.

  4. I think secretly they were all afraid they’d want to bite off the chocolate penis.

  5. [...] i’ve done two posts in the past concerning weird things people did with chocolate, one about a chocolate jesus done by artist cosimo cavallero and one about chocolate truffles in the shape of a hepatitis c virus. in the meantime i have [...]
